Unfortunately, many children in Haiti are robbed of their childhood because they are forced to live a life of slavery and servitude. Restavecs, as they are called, are removed from everyday society and kept as personal servants. They don't get the chance to socialize with their peers or receive an education. When these children become adults, they are often tossed out onto the streets with no skills to help them rebuild their lives.
All of the world's children should be given opportunities to learn, grow, and play with their friends. They should not be subjected to manual labor and harsh treatment by slave owners who keep them for their own selfish reasons. Sign the petition asking UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to promote the establishment of programs and services in Haiti that would help children become functional and productive members of society, not domestic servants.
Dear Secretary Ban, As someone who cares about the well-being of children worldwide, I am writing to ask that you lend your support to the children in Haiti who are being forced to live lives of servitude and slavery. Starting at a young age, many children are treated as domestic servants, also known as restavecs. Not only are they subjected to harsh manual labor, they are also prohibited from living normal lives and growing up with their peers. This severely limits their mental and spiritual growth, thereby making it impossible for them to reassimilate into regular society. When the children finally reach adulthood, they are pushed out onto the streets with no knowledge as to how to assume a productive and fulfilling life. This system inherently promotes violence, homelessness, and extreme poverty. We must take action to help these poor children. There is no reason that innocent kids should be performing physical labor at the command of a master. Please use your power as UN Secretary General to establish programs for these children to take refuge in. We must make sure they are given all of the necessary tools to overcome a future of servitude and poverty. Thank you. |
