Help Girls in Afghanistan Get to School Safely

Mirwais Mena School for Girls is located just outside of Kandahar, in southern Afghanistan. It is the only school for more than five hundred Afghan girls. In 2008, several girls attending the Mirwais Mena School were attacked by men with acid, a common tactic used by the Taliban, which opposes education for girls. Despite the danger, the school stayed open. Donations from New York Times readers helped purchase a bus and pay a driver's salary so the students could have secure rides to and from class. The same bus still serves the girls of Mirwais Mena School, but the cost of operating the vehicle is sometimes more than the families can afford.

You can help. Just $6 helps provide a month of rides to and from Mirwais Mena School for one brave Afghan girl.
